About the Department

The Department of Czech Literature and Literary Criticism focuses on a range of literary and cultural fields. It provides a complete range of teaching in these fields – not only the history of Czech literature, but also literary theory, literary criticism, world literature, textual studies and editorial practice. Research at the Department focuses mainly on Czech fictional literature from various periods, regional culture, literary genres, and Czech-Polish / Czech-Slovak cultural relations. Department staff also research the issue of space, landscape and the city in literature, working in conjunction with the Centre for Regional Studies (also a part of the Faculty of Arts). Students play an active role in the Department’s research projects.
