About the Department

The Department of History is a center for both research and teaching with over six decades of experience in their field. It began to be established in the 1960s at the newly founded Pedagogical Institute in Ostrava, which was transformed into the University of Ostrava in the early 1990s. From the beginning, however, the department placed great emphasis on professional research in the Ostrava region.

The Department teaches a wide range of degrees and courses at both Bachelor′s and Master′s levels, either as single-subject degrees or in combination with another subject (e.g. English, German, etc.). Graduates of the Master′s degrees may continue their studies in the Department′s doctoral programme (Historical Sciences). In the follow-up Master′s programme called Central European Historical Studies with a focus on Czech, Polish and Slovak history, the department cooperates with similar institutions at the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland) and Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (Slovakia). Students therefore complete their studies at all three universities.

Members of the Department are actively involved in a range of national and university-level research projects and publish extensively in their specialised fields. The Department also has numerous links with partner institutions abroad as part of its research cooperation and via the Erasmus+ student exchange programme.
