Research
Research at the Department is conducted in conjunction with the research centres at the Faculty of Arts: the Centre for Economic and Social History, the Centre for Research in Medieval Society and Culture (Vivarium), and the Institute for Regional Studies. The research interests of the Department’s staff focus on the history of art and architecture in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day, including culture and art in minority communities and genre-related aspects of art. Applying an interdisciplinary approach (overlapping with historical sciences and sociological disciplines), the research maps cultural and industrial heritage in the specific conditions of north-eastern Moravia and Silesia (including the Ostrava industrial region) with a focus on the revitalization, use and sustainable development of technical and industrial heritage sites. An important aspect of the Department’s work is the promotion and presentation of industrial heritage sites to the expert community and the general public. Department staff are actively involved in international projects, NAKI (National and Cultural Identity) programmes, Czech Science Foundation programmes, and also grant projects within the University of Ostrava supporting the development of talented students (the Student Grant Programme).
