Research

Besides the Department’s teaching activities, it also carries out a range of linguistic research as part of various programmes (e.g. the Czech Science Foundation, the ‘NAKI’ National and Cultural Identity programme) and in conjunction with partners at other universities, research institutes and other organizations in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Core areas of research at the Department:

  • onomastics (socio-onomastics, political and literary onomastics, theory of proper names, research into toponyms)
  • quantitative linguistics (quantitative text analysis, quantitative syntax)
  • sociolects (slang, argot)

Other areas of research at the Department:

  • electronic communication (internet communication)
  • the current spoken and written Czech language
  • the language of the media and advertising
