Analytic philosophy in Visegrad countries

Analytic philosophy is probably the most important philosophical tradition in contemporary philosophy. It originated from interests in the foundations of logic and mathematics and later spread into all other fields of philosophy from philosophy of science to ethics and (even) aesthetics. From the very beginning its aim was to enhance critical thinking by providing tools, methods and approaches that encourage rigorous reasoning and clear communication. Its emphasis on clarity of speech, logical analysis, focus on evidence and justification or appreciation of scientific methods provides a valuable tool for orienting current scientific, philosophical and political discussion or public debate.

Analytic philosophy was primarily developed in Anglo-Saxon countries, Germany, Austria and Scandinavia. However, one should also bear in mind that Polish logic and philosophy (the Lvov-Warsaw school) remains one of its main origins. Moreover, several important achievements of analytic philosophy are the result of contributions of analytic philosophers from Visegrad countries. The prominent examples (among many) are Tarski's semantical theory of truth, Lakatos' philosophy of science or Tichý's Transparent intensional logic. Yet many of these achievements are still not broadly known among the students and general public of Visegrad countries. The aim of our project is to popularise those achievements and spread knowledge of them among students, scholars and the wider public, both in Visegrad countries and internationally.
