About the Department

The Department of Latin Language and Culture teaches courses for the degree ‘Latin Language and Culture’, Latin courses for students of other humanities degrees (single-subject History, Art History, some philology degrees) at the Faculty of Arts, as well as teaching specialist Latin and medical terminology for the Faculty of Medicine. Research at the Department focuses mainly on medieval Latin philosophy including elements of auxiliary historical sciences: Department staff prepare editions of literary and diplomatic texts, translate Latin works into Czech, and conduct literary, linguistic and auxiliary historical analyses of works of medieval Latin literature. The members of the Department are closely involved in the Faculty’s Centre for Research in Medieval Society and Culture (Vivarium).
