AnotationThe so-called Mosaic physics (or Mosaic natural philosophy) was a genuine early modern endeavour to establish the most faithful natural philosophy based on a literal reading of the Holy Scriptures, especially the first chapter of the Book of Genesis. The thinkers encompassed under this label explicitly opposed both the traditional natural-philosophical authorities (headed by Aristotle) and the emerging experimental natural philosophy, since they believed that the most reliable knowledge of the world could be gleaned from Scripture. Although Mosaic physics has received some scholarly attention, it still represents a remarkably underexplored field, both from the point of view of the history of philosophy and of the history of science. The project, therefore, aims to systematically analyse the conceptions of the ?founding fathers? of early modern Mosaic physics and examine its second life among the 'Comenians', i.e., J. A. Comenius and his successors. The findings will be presented in one Czech and five English papers and one Czech monograph.
