AnotationSocial in- and exclusion belongs to the basic topics of sociological research. We understand social in- and exclusion as a multidimensional phenomenon. Social exclusion is not limited only to material deprivation: it describes a state in which individuals are unable to participate fully in economic, social, political and cultural life of the society. Social inclusion is defined as the process of improving the terms of participation in society, particularly for people who are disadvantaged. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain 27 years ago, European countries and especially the countries of middle-eastern and south-eastern Europe are facing new mechanisms of social and cultural in- and exclusion in many fields of everyday life. We must consider, that social exclusion of parts of the population based on socio-economic and socio-cultural criteria is in the middle and south-eastern countries a relatively new phenomenon, as these societies were - because of the levelling policy by the Communist parties - economically and culturally almost homogeneous.Due to our definition of social in- and exclusion in the text above, we focus on two aspects of in- and exclusion understanding them as parts of the overall social exclusion of individuals or social groups: one research team focuses on labour and labour market as a tool of social in- and exclusion. The other team deals with in- and exclusion on the field of culture: redefinition of ?own? and ?foreign? in contemporary culture as a tool of social in- and exclusion. In both research teams we use a multi methodological approach to generate the best research results.
