Abstract
What is a "river"? Is it the waterflow in the riverbed? The complex network of the tributaries? The catchment area, including the entire complexity of the watershed? Is a river a natural phenomenon or a social-technological construction? Is it a hybrid space created through the interaction of humans and the more-than-human? Who, how, and why shaped rivers in the past? Whose voice mattered? The scientists? The politicians? The local communities? The activists? This talk will ask a series of puzzling questions about rivers and their histories, with the aim of mapping out the state-of-the-art in river history globally, with particular relevance to Eastern Europe, in order to find out how to and how not to write a river history.
