Degree programme in a nutshell

Do you want to develop your language proficiency, which will enable you to deepen your understanding of English literature? Do you like reading and would you like to learn to uncover how language works in key Anglophone literary texts? Would you like to study how language is used and functions in traditional and newly emerging media?

You'll develop linguistic competence and expertise in all key areas of English studies: improve your English-language communicative competence, get good insight into the structure and systems of the English language, and develop a solid knowledge of the literatures and cultures of English-speaking countries.

You'll begin with subjects describing sound and grammatical systems of the English language. You'll explore social and cultural history of Great Britain and the United States. You'll get a solid foundation in Introduction to English Language Studies and to the Study of Literature and study how language and literature interact with society. In American and British Literature you'll learn how to study, evaluate and interpret literary genres and movements using key literary critical concepts.

You'll move on to subjects such as Lexicology and Stylistics, Discourse Analysis, New Media and Communication, Corpus-Based English Language Studies in which you gain knowledge of the key approaches for linguistic, discourse analytical and corpus-oriented analysis. You'll also be able to choose from semi-optional courses ranging from Intercultural Communication to Jewish American Literature. In the third year you will write your Bachelor dissertation on a topic reflecting most of our students' special needs and interests.

You may also choose to spend some time abroad exploring the culture and society for yourself while studying at a partner institution, or undertaking a work placement. Find out more about studying abroad at International Cooperation and Exchange Programmes.

What do we expect from you?

The admission procedure does not include an entrance examination. In order to benefit fully from the programme, you must first demonstrate sufficient ability to understand and express yourself in both spoken and written English. Your will be evaluated on the basis of your submitted certificate of language proficiency certificate (IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each part; ToEFL iBT 80 overall with at least 18 in each part; Duolingo English Test 100 overal with at least 100 in each part) proving that your proficiency in the English language reaches at least level B2 (in CEFR).

What will you learn?

You will acquire linguistic knowledge and competences necessary for communication in various types of institutions:

• you will increase your English language competence to the level of proficiency (C1 in CEFR) developing your communication skills in a variety of domains;
• you will get acquainted with essential approaches to text analysis and learn how to employ them to be able to uncover and explore the text structure, function, and the layers of meaning for its effective reading and interpretation;
• you will learn how to understand historical and cultural contexts and domains of Anglophone countries;
• you will be able to get oriented in Anglophone literary theory using specialized literary terminology that will enable you to analyse and interpret crucial literary texts;
• you will learn the essentials of academic writing production that will enable you to write your thesis; you will learn how to write effective academic texts and how to analyze them;
• you will be able to identify a variety of professional and specialised genres, and you will be trained in critical reading so as to reveal the author’s intention and communication strategies.

How will the degree equip you for the job market?

As an English Philology graduate you will develop critical, analytical and communication skills which enable you to pursue two possible paths: to continue your studies in our Master's programme(s), or to enter the labour market. Our recent graduates have entered careers as diverse as tourism, the media, publishing, international relations, translating and interpreting, industry and commerce, and further studies.
