About the Department of Slavic Studies

The Department of Slavic Studies consists of three internal sub-departments.

The Department of Polish Studies provides teaching in the fields of Polish Language and Literature for a two-year Bachelor degree programme, of the standard and major/minor type. Two-year Master's degree graduate programmes are also available. polonicum 2006 The four-year and five-year programmes of the Department of Polish Studies – which are currently being phased out - prepare teachers of Polish Language and Literature for the second stage of primary schools and for secondary schools, a five-year Polish Language programme is also currently being phased out. The Department also provides teaching of the Polish language as a second Slavic language for related language degree programmes and teaching of Polish as a foreign language for students of all faculties of the University of Ostrava, as well as providing consultation in the field. The Department of Polish Studies runs a doctoral programme in Polish Language, has the right to award degrees based on ‘post-Master’s’ examinations and habilitations (to Associate Professor) as well as appointing full Professors. The research interests of the Department members focus on the comparison of Czech and Polish from the diachronic and synchronic viewpoints, Czech-Polish phraseology, research into the Polish language in the Těšín region and specific questions of the local Polish minority community, issues of the Polish language in the Czech Republic, Czech-Polish communication in the sphere of business, comparison of contemporary Czech and Polish literature, Czech literature written in Polish, and the methodology of teaching Polish in a Czech environment.

The Department of Russian Studies provides teaching of Russian Language and Literature in standard and major/minor type Bachelor degree programmes, two-year Master's degree graduate programmes of Russian Language Teaching for secondary and primary schools, and Russian Language and Literature. The four-year and five-year Master's degree programmes train Russian language and literature teachers for secondary schools and the second stage of primary schools. The Bachelor degree programme Russian in Business prepares students to work in the sphere of business and tourism. The Department also provides Russian language teaching for students of the University of Ostrava, consultations and Russian language examinations for doctoral degree programmes, language consulting and intensive language courses, preparatory courses for studies of Russian language at the Faculty of Arts, and lifelong learning courses for current teachers of the Russian language. The research focuses on foreign language communication in the sphere of business, communication barriers and lexical interference, as well as issues of communicative syntax and speech models. Research in the field of literature focuses on the reception of Russian literature and culture in the Czech environment, on interdisciplinarity in literary theory and the methodology of literary theory (East and West: evolution of Slavic and Western aesthetic and philosophical thought, literary movements, cultural eras and literary forms in general; comparative genealogical and hermeneutic reflection: theory and methodology, depth hermeneutics and its spiritual and moral dimensions; the evolution of worldwide literary theory; comparative morphology of history and culture, consilience of literature and philosophy).

The Department of Applied Slavic Studies provides teaching of Slavic languages for all degree programmes of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava and offers courses in the Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovak and Ukrainian languages. The teachers also provide consultations in questions of Slavic language comparative studies.
